After a financially difficult period, the Holland Casino in Enschede is going all-in. The old-fashioned interior made way for a luxurious interior.
The official opening of the renovated 'gambling palace' has now taken place. The casino could not avoid innovating.
The fact that the casino has undergone a major metamorphosis is immediately visible upon entering: enormous gold decorations decorate the ceiling, a modern bar catches the eye and the carpet in various shades of red looks luxurious. All this according to the plan of an architect from Las Vegas,
who drew inspiration from Enschede's history as an influential textile city.
The renovation of the casino took more than a year, but guests could still go there, because the establishment has not been closed for a day in all that time. “
We deliberately worked in phases,” said casino manager Rolf Paapst.
The Holland Casino in Enschede was in need of renovation because, apart from a few minor adjustments, it still looked the same as it did in 2002, when the branch opened.
“The interior no longer met expectations for a nice evening out. The new design is more in line with current times: it is more intimate, more modern and lighter.”
According to Paapst, the lighter appearance of the casino contributes to the social obligation surrounding the prevention of problematic gambling.
The less light there is in a room, the more financial risk people take.
At the same time, new guests, and therefore income, are desperately needed. Holland Casino, which is owned by the Dutch state,
is not doing well financially. In the first six months of 2024, the company made a loss of 3.5 million euros,
partly due to rising personnel costs and the increase in the gambling tax introduced this year. The corona pandemic had already taken a toll.
How does the loss relate to this renovation? “Postponing maintenance and renovation costs more in the long term than it yields.
After 21 years, renovations were necessary anyway, we couldn't avoid that," says Paapst. “
During the renovation we made cost-saving choices, such as leaving the fourth floor intact.”
Due to the financial situation, Holland Casino has consciously chosen to celebrate the reopening of the Enschede branch less exuberantly than previous (re)openings, it said.
There are a number of festive activities planned that have already taken place.
Let's hope that all this gives Holland Casino a financial booster!
