Poker Hand Rankings
The various poker hands from highest to lowest:

1. Royal Flush:
A, K, Q, J, 10
all of the same suit

2. Straight Flush:
Any five card sequence
in the same suit
(Ex: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 )

3. Four of a Kind:
All four cards of
the same index
(Ex: Q, Q, Q, Q)

4. Full House:
Three of a kind
combined with a pair
(Ex: K, K, 3, 3, 3)

5. Flush:
Any five cards of the same
suit, but not in sequence

6. Straight:
Five cards in sequence,
but not in the same suit

7. Three of a Kind:
Three cards of the same index

8. Two Pair:
Two separate pairs
(Ex: Q, Q, 7, 7)

9. Pair:
Two cards of the same index

10. High Card:

A/A = Weapons of Massive Destruction, American Airliners, Pocket Rockets, Bullets

A/K = Big Slick, Anna Kournikova

K/K = The Cowboys

K/J = Kojak

Q/Q = The Ladies

J/J = The Hooks

8/8 = The Snowman

10/2 = Doyle Brunson

J/5 = Motown Hand

2/2 = The Ducks

7/2 = Beer Hand

Q/3 = Gay Waiter

5/5 = Presto, Speed Limit

9/5 = Dolly Parton

7/7 = Walking Sticks

The single most important term for an entry-level poker player to learn may be "tight aggressive". It's a style of play where you play a relatively low proportion of hands (tight), but when you do play, you do so aggressively, largely by leading the betting and raising rather than calling.

It's probably the style that will get new players into fewer troublesome situations while you learn, and it's also a good way to become a break-even or even a profitable player quite quickly.
